2004-05 Society President Ronald P. Vallort P.E. – Refrigeration
Theme for this year -
“ASHRAE: The Strongest Link in the Cold Chain”
Presidential Article in Journal (partial copy):
“There are countries where, right now, up
to 50 percent of the crops fail to make it to the first phase
of the after-harvest food chain. ASHRAE must help to find ways
to construct energy efficient, low cost refrigerated transport
and storage facilities in countries ravaged by hunger.
“And we must remember that refrigeration
has other uses besides food. Refrigeration is a vital part of
the infrastructure necessary to deliver vaccines worldwide.
Thousands of lives around the world have been
saved by vaccines for diseases such as polio, measles, chicken
pox and hepatitis. Yet, as many as 3 million children die every
year from diseases that are preventable with available vaccines.
That’s as if 30 jumbo jets filled with children crashed
every day of the year.”

Todays Thoughts:
Looking back at the last time CRC had a joint meeting in Hawaii,
Northern Nevada’s own Cyril G. Hansen, P.E. was at the helm
as Director and Regional Chair for Region X: May 15-18, 1990,
Honolulu, HI, Regions X & XI. When ASHVE merged with ASRE
in 1959 the regions were a total of 10 but Region “X”
(not 10) included British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, a small
part of Idaho, California, Nevada and Arizona. By 1979 so many
Chapters had been Chartered that a new Region XI was created to
incorporate all the Chapters in Canada west of Thunder Bay, Ontario,
Alaska, Washington, and Oregon with “our” Region X
incorporating California, Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii. In 1994
Region X was realigned to include seven “overseas”
Chapters: Cairo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan, India
and Saudi Arabia totaling 20 Chapters. As the DRC in 1996-99 at
the Regions Council I made the motion to create a Region XIII
for the Chapters in the Asian time zone, i.e. Singapore, Malaysia,
Hong Kong and Taiwan and the balance of the “overseas”
Chapters were continued as an “At-Large” status. Region
X then became what it is today totaling 14 Chapters. The splitting
of Region X and XI did not cause the camaraderie of the members
to split so the many traditions of joint meetings, regional dinners,
CRC’s, golf tournaments and other events continue. This
year’s CRC will be another celebration of these great traditions.
Come join in the fun and help make the traditions carry on in
Hawaii – Just like we did 25 years ago.
In Closing:
In some ways, I find the best of my recollections
include these many trails I followed in the ASHRAE directions
come from the participation in the action at all events. Most
ASHRAE members seem to have that quality of a human being that
strives to be productive in what needs to be accomplished for
a better environment. It’s true that becoming involved does
not have immediate benefits but more of gaining knowledge from
those who really need the correct answers of HVAC&R problems.
The upcoming CRC in Hawaii is THE ideal place to get a sense of
what I am trying to report here. A sense of goodwill, understanding
and a genuine believe that your participation will benefit you
directly and those who you work around. It is hard to explain
how that sense will come to you but it does. If you like being
around those who have this understanding and how they (probably
like you) do not have time to take away from your job to be there
will give that time as effectively as they know how to help ASHRAE
benefit us all. Go to CRC and feel the real things ASHRAE has
to offer and volunteer to help.
